Preparatory College

Dean, Preparatory College, Dr Siham Mohamed Suliemen

Dr SihamThe transition from high school to college can be very difficult for many students. The Preparatory College was established in 1996 at the University of Medical Sciences and Technology to act as a bridge between high school and college. Students from Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Pharmacy and Faculty of Medical Laboratory Sciences, study their first semester at the Preparatory College before they proceed to their faculties.
We have a system of courses and academic counseling that is designed to address these issues and help the student during the transition.
A number of carefully designed courses are offered in the first semester to help the entering student.

 Mission

  • Raising the level of awareness of students relative to changes involved in moving to a university environment and relative to the services offered by the university to help adjust to these changes.
  • To equip high-quality male and female secondary school graduates with the academic and personal skills necessary to succeed in a university based on:
    • The principles of personal responsibility and accountability
    • Pervasive analytical/critical thought
    • Attainment of communicative, technological, and professional competence
    • Strength in both teamwork and leadership.
  • Helping students to develop a positive attitude toward their first year at the university.

Academic Advisory System

One of the goals in designing the academic advisory system was to enable the advisers to identify students’ problems and students at risk of academic difficulty early in the first semester so that treatment could begin in the critical first 6-8 weeks of college.

Each student is assigned an academic adviser who will follow and guide him through the semester.

Students are required to meet with their academic advisers at least once a month to discuss their progress in their program of study. The academic adviser would also take care of the counseling of other academic matters, such as failure in courses and attendance of classes.
